Guidelines for incorporating scientific knowledge and practice on rare diseases into higher education: neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses as a model disorder
This article addresses the educational issues associated with rare diseases (RD) and in particular the Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCLs, or CLN diseases) in the curricula of Health Sciences and Professional's Training Programs. Our aim is to develop guidelines for improving scientific knowledge and practice in higher education and continuous learning programs. Rare diseases (RD) are collectively common in the general population with 1 in 17 people affected by a RD in their lifetime. Inherited defects in genes involved in metabolism are the commonest group of RD with over 8000 known inborn errors of metabolism. The majo...

A call for disability health curricula in medical schools
Trends Mol Med. 2022 Sep 9:S1471-4914(22)00208-8. doi: 10.1016/j.molmed.2022.08.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeople with disabilities encounter significant health and health-care inequities yet disability health training in medical education remains inadequate. This Scientific Life article examines the need to integrate disability health education into medical school curricula and shares successful training examples that can serve as a framework for how to accomplish this.PMID:36109318 | DOI:10.1016/j.molmed.2022.08.004

Medical education empowered by generative artificial intelligence large language models
Trends Mol Med. 2023 Sep 15:S1471-4914(23)00211-3. doi: 10.1016/j.molmed.2023.08.012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenerative artificial intelligence (GAI) large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, have become the world's fastest growing applications. Here, we provide useful strategies for educators in medical and health science (M&HS) to integrate GAI-LLMs into learning and teaching practice, ultimately enhancing students' digital capability.PMID:37718142 | DOI:10.1016/j.molmed.2023.08.012

What are we talking about when we talk about education and Chagas? A systematic review of the issue
In this study, we surveyed, described, and critically analyzed studies approaching the link education-Chagas disease in scientific publications from the last 15 years. We aimed at contributing methodological-theoretical elements to (re)think the development of educational research and experiences that truly help facing this issue. From the electronic search of scientific literature in 6 databases, we found 426 articles, out of which we selected 25. We incorporated 10 articles from other sources to this initial corpus and performed both qualitative and quantitative analyses over the total number [35] to characterize the s...

Approximate search for known gene clusters in new genomes using PQ-trees
We report on 29 chromosomal gene clusters that are rearranged in plasmids, where the rearrangements are guided by the corresponding PQ-trees. One of these results, coding for a heavy metal efflux pump, is further analysed to exemplify how PQFinder can be harnessed to reveal interesting new structural variants of known gene clusters.PMID:34243815 | PMC:PMC8272295 | DOI:10.1186/s13015-021-00190-9
